Dear Reader,

In the last Newsletter in 2011 we announced the winner of the 2011 SOPIB Award, Dr. Jose Antonio Quaggio, researcher and lecturer at the Centre for Soil and Environmental Sciences of the Agricultural Institute in Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. In this Newsletter, we will focus on the research of Dr. Quaggio and his team on the impact of three potassium fertilizers: K2SO4, KCl, and a combination of K2SO4 and KCl on yield and quality of pineapple. Having application programs of these three K-sources side by side in a well designed experiment make it possible to draw firm conclusions on their impact on availability of K in the soil, plant nutrition and growth, and fruit yield. The experimental design also allowed an objective economic evaluation of the three fertilizer programs, and provides useful information on the best choice of fertilizer and its optimal application rate to secure the highest fruit yield and quality.
